The Destructive Force of Unchecked Intellectuals

“"public action" and "legal steps" were needed to prevent XXX." Such steps should be "dictated by science and not by political expediency,"”

Who does not recognise this pattern? Every other day someone tells us we have to “follow science” and listen to this or that expert. It has to be done as quickly as possible, because the science (or expertise) is clear and further deliberation not required.

So, what could XXX be? Described by Thomas Sowell in Knowledge And Decisions this is an example that is about 100 years old. In this case it is: "the "decline of American intelligence."

It was the pressure of intellectuals about 100 years ago to implement their recent fashionable idea: eugenics. Let's decide who is supposed to procreate and who is not. Who decides? Obviously the infallible experts and scientific counselers.

Sowell describes the general pattern that can be observed when intellectuals try to achieve political relevance:
(1) the almost casual ease with which vast expansions of the amount and scope of government power were called for by intellectuals to be used against their fellow citizens and fellow human beings, for purposes of implementing the intellectuals' vision,
[…]

(2) the automatic presumption that differences between the current views of the relevant intellectuals ("experts") and the views of others reflect only the misguided ignorance of the latter,
[…]

(3) the confidence with which predictions were made, without reference to any prior record of correct predictions nor to any monitoring processes to confirm the future validity of current predictions,
[…]

(4) the moral as well as intellectual superiority that accompanied the implicit faith that the current views of the "experts" represented
[…]

(5) a concentration on determining the most likely alternative conclusions rather than whether any of the conclusions had sufficient basis to go beyond tentative cognitive results to sweeping policy prescription.

Totalitarian Leanings

Ask yourself which party or organisation is showing totalitarian leanings in your country. All quotations from the excellent book by Thomas Sowell, Knowledge And Decisions:



It is not simply the origin or basis of political power that defines totalitarianism, nor even the amount of power or its ruthless application. A tyrant is not automatically a totalitarian. It is the political blanketing of the vast range of human activities-from intimate personal relations to philosophical beliefs-that constitutes "totalitarianism."

The founder of fascism and originator of the term "totalitarianism," Benito Mussolini, summed it up: "All through the state, all for the state, nothing against the state, and nothing outside the state."' Totalitarianism "recognizes the individual only insofar as his interests coincide with those of the State."

Totalitarian ideology typically features 

(1) the localization of evil-in Jews, capitalists, or some other group-so that comprehensive political solutions to age-old human problems seem feasible within a reasonable time horizon by surgically removing the offending group, leaving a healthy body politic intact, 

(2) the localization of wisdom, to explain why this miraculous cure has escaped so many minds for so many centuries, as well as explaining the necessity for superseding democratic institutions and beliefs, 

(3) a single scale of values by which priorities may be arranged in every field of human endeavor, to be achieved "at all cost," 

(4) the presupposition of sufficient knowledge to achieve whatever goal may be projected, 

(5) the urgency of the "problem" to be "solved" so that ruthlessness is the lesser of two evils, and 

(6) a psychic identification with millions, whose opinions may nevertheless be disregarded and whose lives may be sacrificed in the cause, without feelings of guilt.

Finally, the totalitarian ideology must be a self-enclosed sys tem, to exclude alternative views and visions which are-regardless of their substance-inherently antithetical to a single totalitarian ideology.

Model me this

“Overawed by what they do not understand, they mistakenly distrust their own common sense and adopt inappropriate procedures devised by mathematicians with no scientific experience.”

Excellent article by Jessica Weinkle on modeling and climate risk assessment.

“Climate change advocates, media, lawsuits, politicians, and financial interests align to make a terrible muddle out of the science on disasters, economic losses, and climate change.  Meanwhile, the public has a real insurance problem.”

I personally believe this is part of the “searching under the light fallacy”. Following the old joke.

It is really hard to get the right data and accurate models to help understanding a specific problem. Not only in “climate”. “Data science” today more often does the inverse: which data is easily accessible; data quality, relevance... not so important. Then we apply “state of the art statistics and — most importantly — AI” and the “scientific”paper and the media headline are finished.

All Models are Wrong

 The apocryphal quotation from George Box is well know:

“All models are wrong, but some are useful.”

The actual quotation from his 1976 paper is actually much more relevant today:

“Since all models are wrong the scientist cannot obtain a correct one by excessive elaboration. On the contrary following William of Occam he should seek an economical description of natural phenomena. Just as the ability to devise simple but evocative models is the signature of the great scientist so overelaboration and overparameterization is often the mark of mediocrity.”

This is actually the extension of Aristotles insight from his Nicomachean Ethics:

“[…] it is the mark of an educated man to look for precision in each class of things just so far as the nature of the subject admits” […] 

“[We must] not look for precision in all things alike, but in each class of things such precision as accords with the subject-matter, and so much as is appropriate to the inquiry. For a carpenter and a geometer investigate the right angle in different ways; the former does so in so far as the right angle is useful for his work, while the latter inquires what it is or what sort of thing it is; for he is a spectator of the truth.”

Thinking Time

A nature article suggests: 

“Scientists need more time to think”. 

No shit, Sherlock. So obvious, so correct. But not only scientists, though. Performance in most teams (e.g., programming) is abysmal due to distraction.  

“More digital devices equals less time to concentrate and to think.”

Most managers, I encounter, are concerned about the fact that their teams are not performing. When you look at their teams, you find out that this isn't just capitalist talk. The output of most programming teams, for instance, is abysmal. But then the same managers would rather not take any serious measures to improve this performance. The reason is distraction, and they either don't want to believe it or don't want to do anything to fix it. Partly because it is their fault as well. 

Who enters the office multiple times a day and changes direction? Who installed the company messenger that claims to improve communication and performance (when in fact it does the exact opposite)? Who did not manage to isolate teams from customers and all other stakeholders? 

The Nature article suggests that the problem is, that  “thinking time […] is rarely, if ever, quantified in employment practices.” This shows in what madhouse we live. To think that quantifying thinking time would improve the situation shows that we lost our marbles in box ticking activities. Let's put “thinking” into the backlog and assign thinking minutes to every one. Maybe Joe can think from 10:12 to 10:23 and Jane from 14:44 to 15:11.

Naturally, it is imperative that each individual accurately records their thoughts in the time recording, including the precise descriptions of their thoughts. Felicity Mellor from imperial college London is pointing out this nonsensical idea:

“Mellor argues that including yet another box in an evaluation form might not go down well.”

A systemic problem, such as this bureaucratisation, cannot be solved by increasing the bureaucracy, but by removing it.

Google puts thumb on scale in US presidential election

It is quite interesting. Today I tried out the following: Enter “donate to ” and look for auto completion from Google. I tried out A-Z, meaning: from “donate to a”  to “donate to z”, see some screenshots below.

Each letter leads to a completions suggestions. Even x, y and z. For instance, one could donate to Yemen or Zaka, whatever that might be. There are only two letters with no suggestions: “r” and “t”. Why? Because “t” would suggest “Trump” and “r” the Republican party. Or is should, according to the demand to donate for Donald Trump. Other journalists tried this out before me and “donate to t” suggested completions to “trans youth”, “trussel trust” up to “transgender india”. One could assume these were not the options the majority were searching for at the moment... 

It seems that this manipulation was even to obvious for Google, so they removed the two letters “r” and “t” completely.

Now imagine what happens behind the curtains, when they even do manipulation like that in the open...

Economic Predictions and the Future

Tyler Cowen briefly reviews an economic book from the 1980 with contributions by Nobel laureates of the time.

How did the predictions pan out? Well, as to be expected: they wrote about issues that have little relevance now and overlooked practically all topics relevant today.

“the book stoked my fears that today’s economists and analysts do not have a good handle on America’s imminent problems.”
Bottom line, over, and over again: Predictions of experts are worth very little in the real world. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately? The future is unclear and open.

Software Destroying Lives — the UK Post Office Scandal — a Solitary Case?

“Hundreds of self-employed workers at the state-owned Post Office were wrongly prosecuted or convicted between 1999 and 2015 for false accounting, theft and fraud because of glitches in a software system that incorrectly showed money missing from accounts.

Some spent time in jail, while others went bankrupt, saw their marriages destroyed, and some died before their names were cleared.”

and: “The Post Office maintained for years that data from the defective Horizon computer accounting system, developed by Japan's Fujitsu and rolled out in 1999, was reliable, while accusing sub-postmasters of theft.”, Reuters

I have been working for a long time on the question of software complexity and quality, or rather, the lack thereof, in most systems under observation. The low quality of software combined with increasing, I want to say, crippling complexity shows increasing bad effects on our society, which is entirely dependent on software. Software is the digital nervous system of our world, and we are suffering from a severe neurological disease in that sense.

Now, what interests me even more than the specifics of this case is: why would this be an isolated case? Because all others produce software so much better? 🤣

Renewables in Europe: Satire takes over News

Impossible to distinguish between satire and news any longer: The solar industry “warns” that (after important parts of Europe moved to solar and wind) the energy prices are so hight that there might not be much of a future for the industry in Europe:

“Europe's bid to expand its green tech industry faces a host of challenges, including high energy costs and supply chain issues, solar industry representatives gathered in Madrid warned on Thursday.”

But they are producing in China (~500g CO2e), Vietnam (~400g CO2e) and Thailand (500g CO2e). France by comparison has < 100g CO2e.


The production conditions of solar in China are especially relevant:

“But the majority of experts consulted by Environmental Progress agree that China’s competitive advantage did not lie in an innovative new technological process but rather in the very same factors the country has always used to outcompete the West: cheap coal-fired energy, mass government subsidies for strategic industries, and human labor operating in poor working conditions.”

Against all Odds — Open Data Formats Win?

Against all odds — Open Formats prevail! I find it very inspiring, that in the long run open formats seem to prevail, even if they are not initially taken on (or even fought against) by market leaders. Two examples I found inspiring:

  1. SVG, scalable vector graphics. I remember that I explained this format in my IBM XML courses in the early 2000s. To be honest, it was a fringe format then and I showed it as an example of possible XML-based data-formats, but honestly did not believe it would survive the next years. Now all major graphic applications support SVG and in increasingly better implementations.
  2. EPUB vs. MOBI/Kindle. Amazon, the by far largest ebook publisher never supported ePub in the beginning but pushed its own AZW/MOBI format. Recently Amazon is “winding down” support for its own format on Kindle and asks users to use ePub.

(The SVG logo definitely could use an overhaul though 😉)

Existential Threats

What is an existential risk? The Cambridge Existential Risks Initiative (CERI) uses the following definition:

“An 'existential risk' (x-risk) is an event that could permanently and drastically reduce humanity’s potential, for example by causing human extinction.”, CamXRisk

A problem with discussing existential risks is that the definitions or understandings of it are quite ambiguous. Also, the Cambridge definition has a weakness. What does drastically mean specifically? 

I would try my own definition:

An existential risk to humanity is a threat that could damage large parts of the planet or human structures or kill  large parts of humanity to an extent or in a way, that a recovery to modern levels of society is not likely within a timeframe of a centuries.  

Every definition has its weaknesses, but I think we have a working understanding of what we are talking about. Of course, even if an existential threat does not go the full way, say we would face a nuclear exchange that is limited to Europe, the effects on the global society might not be existential in the narrow sense of the meaning but still very dramatic. Lastly, we have to keep further parameters in view, such as timeframe (how fast does the risk play out once it happens) and range of effects (how far-reaching is the effect, e.g. does it hit “only” humanity, or the whole global ecosystem).


Now having the definition game out of the way, what existential risks are out there, can we list and maybe even rank them? Or does a ranking of existential threats make no sense at all?  Existential means, (1) huge consequences when the worst case happens and evidently also (2) it did not happen yet, at least not to our modern society. That means, we have no proper statistical basis to draw reliable conclusions from. A ranking could be based on probabilities of entry and severity of effect. But as we do not have sufficient data from prior cases for that reason, probability of entry are very vague and usually just guesses. The same is true for the severity of the effect. As Niall Ferguson writes:

“A pandemic is made up of a new pathogen and the social networks that it attacks. We cannot understand the scale of the contagion by studying only the virus itself, because the virus will infect only as many people as social networks allow it to. At the same time, a catastrophe lays bare the societies and states that it strikes”

This is not only true for pandemics, but for other societal and potential existential risks as well. To estimate the effect of an existential risk thus means (1) we have to understand the mechanic of the risk very well and (2) how societies react to it. For that reason, the situation can be counterintuitive in numerous instances. For instance, climate changes and yet predicted (and reported) effects do not actually happen:

“annual US deaths from tornadoes have fallen by more than a factor of ten since 1875” 

or extreme weather events might increase in some places and still:

“weather-related death rates fell dramatically during the past one hundred years even as the globe warmed 1.2°C (2.2°F); they’re about 80 times less frequent today than they were a century ago. That’s largely due to better tracking of storms, better flood control, better medical care, and improved resilience as countries have developed. A recent UN report confirms the trend over the past two decades.”, Steven Koonin, Unsettled

Of course, this could change significantly should we come into a runaway situation, which some climate scientists are afraid of but others dispute. The bottom line is: we usually know much less about the mid or long-term outcomes of complex systems than we think we do.

So, any ranking of existential risks tends to be a fools' errand. Thus, in my list the ranking is not to be taken too seriously, but it is not entirely negligible. For instance,  nuclear weapons are number one for a good reason: There is a reasonable chance for a full nuclear exchange, and the consequences are absolutely catastrophic, mitigation and adaptation are minimal, and all that happens in a very short timeframe. Whereas population collapse is a significant threat for our society and there is little room for mitigation, but plays out over decades or centuries, and we can hope for adaptation measures. Climate change is in between, and actually very similar in its mechanic: there is not a lot we can actually do to mitigate, especially in a short time frame, and the effects will most likely play out over long periods of time, which again, opens room for adaptation. But the effects are wider ranging than population collapse, in that the whole biosphere is effected.

These are the reasons why climate change is not in the top five in my list. It is not one event, it is gradual and adaptation much more likely than a nuclear war. Other large humanitarian problems like hunger, poverty or malaria are not on that list either. These, and many others, are terrible threats to human flourishing in parts of the world but are not threatening humanity in a larger or long-term sense. They are rather effects of other problems. Again, this does not mean, we should not do anything against those, but it is simply not the focus of this discussion.

Systemic aspects of most existential threats forbid a naive reading, in the sense, that we should work the list from top to bottom and only continue to “the next action item” once we have completed the previous. In fact, the most fundamental insight is, that there is not one “biggest problem”, not even three or five. Living in a modern, complex society — in the Anthropocene — has positive effects:  we are farther away from nature, safer and with much higher living standards than ever before. We do not die any longer in harmony with nature, as Hans Rosling put it. But it also has negative effects which can be, unfortunately, existential. Many, if not most, of the threats on this list are connected in complex ways. This means, we most likely cannot solve any of those, especially not in isolation. But it also means that we got our priorities wrong in the last decades.

“For every potential calamity, there is at least one plausible Cassandra. Not all prophecies can be heeded. In recent years we may have allowed one risk — namely climate change — to draw our attention away from the others.”

Also, as mentioned above, some threats are on the list are not isolated but can be seen as a potent trigger for other threats, e.g. political extremism or collapse of infrastructure.

Thus, focusing on the mitigation of one risk alone (e.g. climate change), can dramatically increase other risks, as each medication has side effects. Would we, for instance, Just stop oil, this would be a guarantee of an existential disaster for humanity. Often, we did not only get the priorities wrong, but our activities were so inept that they, in fact, increased the risk they were supposed to mitigate and also negatively affected many other risks, especially the ones higher on the list. 

Not focusing our attention on one risk alone is clearly not easy considering the dominating mode of (legacy) media and politics. But it is like not smoking to stay healthy, while at the same time driving a motorcycle and doing wingsuit jumps from mountains. Whatever we do should be a wide-ranging approach, trying to make our society more resilient against various risks, for instance: 

  • Increasing diversity (in supply chains, food production, energy systems, ...).
  • Providing redundancy for important services (grid replacement part agains Carrington events, emergency hospital beds, etc).
  • Preparing for catastrophes with emergency management, properly funded military, etc.
  • Decoupling (for instance financial services), so that a catastrophe in one country does not immediately spill over to others.
  • Creating smaller decoupled, redundant structures that organise bottom up, not heavyweight top down ones.
  • Making societies more wealthy and educated in general helps the society to be better adapted to critical events. This clearly stands in opposition to the ideas of many “progressives”.
  • Try to estimate the positive effects of an intended measure per Euro spent instead of following ideology-driven activities.

One example, where we failed in an embarrassing way and saw our near total lack of preparation is the Covid crisis, to just mention a few aspects:

  • Even though pandemics of this type happened in the past and were predicted by experts, we had no proper studies, which emergency measures would be actually helpful (and even three years later the knowledge is scarce). 
  • We had no PPE stocked in reasonable quantities, not even for medical personel.
  • We had not even crisis processes defined. In the middle of the first lock down, I followed a discussion in German media, where experts were contemplating, where infected people should do. Should they go to the general practitioner or not, to the hospital, etc? 
  • We had no clear and unifying reporting framework established, and even years into the pandemic the data quality was bad.
  • We had no prepared plan how to come to reasonable conclusions quickly, which actions to take (virologists are not the only experts that have a say in a pandemic).

All of these preparations would not have been expensive at, especially considering the cost the lack of preparation inflicted on our society and the fact that we had people whose job it was to do just that.

I think we can create a much more resilient society and mitigate some of the risk, and adapt to others — maybe shift them from existential to problematic, so to speak. Now to come to a suggested list of existential threats with a vague prioritisation subject to what was said before:

  1. Nuclear weapons, voluntary and especially also  involuntary deployment (as we had a very close shave more than once)
  2. Natural or engineered pathogens leading to pandemics — especially considering the recent developments in synthetic biology
  3. Collapse of critical infrastructure (or multiple infrastructures in a domino effect, e.g. ICT failure or attack on ICT triggering energy problems, or financial services supply chains, etc.) that supports or modern society due to human errors or complexity spinning out of control, such as
    • energy infrastructure (e.g. way too little supply of fossil fuel in the next decades; large scale collapse of grids)
    •  global financial system
    •  ICT
    •  supply chains
  4. Solar Superstorm (also called a Carrington Event) which could destroy large parts of modern electrical infrastructure at once. It happened already in the past, for instance in the year 1859 (where the damage was limited for obvious reasons), but we also had a close shave in July of 2012. Also insurances describe that risk, for instance Lloyds:
    • “A Carrington-level, extreme geomagnetic storm is almost inevitable in the future.”
    • “The total U.S. population at risk of extended power outage from a Carrington-level storm is between 20-40 million, with durations of 16 days to 1-2 years.”
  5. Run away automation / robotic (»AI«, but on a more general level), especially in combination with one of the other risks on the list;
  6. Climate change (especially in the case that tipping points and runaway climate change occur)
  7. Nanotechnology or other ways of dramatically changing manufacturing and chemistry leading to nanomachines
  8. Population collapse is an existential threat in slow motion; “Will civilisation end with a bang or with a whimper? It is currently trending to end with a whimper in adult diapers.”, Elon Musk
  9. Ecosystem collapse, biodiversity catastrophe / “global domino effect”
  10. Unknown unknowns
  11. Green Genetical Engineering gone wrong
  12. Political/religious extremism (probably not per se, but in combination with or as a trigger of other factors mentioned above, e.g. nuclear weapons, bioweapons, etc.)
  13. Asteroid impact on Earth (which is so low on the list, because of the assumption, that we should be able to detect this threat early enough and mitigate it)
  14. Geoengineering accident

This list is thought as an encouragement to discuss this issue. Is the order correct? Probably not. Is something missing? I researched for a time to come up with that list, still, most likely I forgot something. This is also why one article focuses on unknown unknowns. This is important. As our knowledge is very limited, it appears to be much wiser to prepare our society for impacts of different types, as mentioned above. 

But is the idea of existential threat actually credible? Some pundits say that eventually humanity turned out to be more resilient than we believed at times (see also  Apocalype Always).  But I think it is short-sighted and such hand-weaving comments are problematic. It seems to be difficult to argue that e.g. nuclear weapons are not an existential threat. Just because someone played Russian Roulette six times and did not die, does not make it a save pastime. 

The confusing fact that nuclear weapons also (most likely) avoided world war three in the past indicates how complex the situation is. Mutual assured destruction, on the one hand, might have avoided a war, but should it still come to a war — even due to technical or human error, as we have seen in the past — it would be, well, mutually destructive. There is no way around it. 

And this paradox seems to be a common attribute of many modern technologies, which seem to make the edge between benefit and catastrophe ever sharper. So we are well advised to take these threats seriously. But to reiterate a point, I made in the beginning: it is a major mistake to mostly focus on one threat in this list and believe we can reduce our societal risk. 

We will not.

(Who is) a conspiracy theorist?


“That a pandemic caused by a bat coronavirus started in the city with the world’s largest programme of research into bat coronaviruses was always intriguing. That among the first people to get ill with allegedly Covid-like symptoms in the month the pandemic began were three scientists working in that lab was highly suspicious. Now that we know their names, we find one of them was collecting what turned out to be the closest cousins of Sars-CoV-2 at the time, and another was doing the very experiments that could have created the virus. These revelations make it almost a slam dunk for the coronavirus lab-leak hypothesis.”, Matt Ridley

We might remind ourselves that a number of experts, among them Peter Daszak and Christian Drosten  published a Lancet article (The Lancet is one of the leading medical journals) in February 2020:

“We have watched as the scientists, public health professionals, and medical professionals of China, in particular, have worked diligently and effectively to rapidly identify the pathogen behind this outbreak, […] 

We stand together to strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.

Quite stunning. Especially considering that this statement was done in February of 2020, when clearly there was not enough evidence and a lot of dispute among scientists (as is documented in many credible reports) to draw that conclusion. 

The former CDC director Dr. Robert R. Redfield states in a US House Select Subcommittee:

“From the earliest days of the pandemic, my view was that both theories about the origin of COVID-19 needed to be aggressively and thoroughly examined. Based on my initial analysis of the data, I came to believe—and still believe today—that it indicates COVID-19 infections more likely were the result of an accidental lab leak than the result of a natural spillover event.”

And the BBC quotes him (albeit in a vitriolic tone that did not age well):

“He claimed he was "sidelined" at the beginning of the pandemic and excluded from meetings as his views were not in line with other major scientists like Dr Fauci, the de-facto face of the US pandemic response.

"It was told to me that they wanted a single narrative, and that I obviously had a different point of view," he said. "Science has debate and they squashed any debate."”

General Systems Patterns: Hysteresis everywhere?

Ludwig von Bertalanffy introduced the idea of a General System Theory in 1969. He understood such a theory as a unifying theory of science, as certain systemic effects or patterns could be found in a number of sciences.

“We need a simpler, more unified approach to scientific problems, we need men who practice science—not a particular science, in a word, we need scientific generalists” 

and

“Unity of Science is granted, not by a utopian reduction of all sciences to physics and chemistry, but by the structural uniformities of the different levels of reality.”

A recurring systemic pattern that I have found to occur in a number of different sciences and domains can be explained by a hysteresis curve.

This type of pattern can be found in physics, biology, organisation theory, media theory / psychology and others. For instance in biology: Martin Scheffer et al discuss Catastrophic Regime Shifts in Ecosystems (Nature 2001):

Constant increase in phosphorous influx into a lake can create an effect similar to curve (1) in the illustration. For a time, the system shows only little ecological effects until a tipping point is reached and the system deteriorates sharply. In some cases the original “healthy” state can be regained by removing the negative effect (Phosphorous in that case). However, as indicated with curve (2), the system has to be reversed significantly beyond the collapsing tipping point until gradual “healing” is made possible.

This hysteresis effect seems to be observable in a number of different domains. Some examples:

Physics: there are many examples in physics, such as: elastic hysteresis, adsorption hysteresis, magnetic hysteresis, electrical hysteresis etc.

Organisational capability: Organisations initially show a certain resilience (observable from the outside) when the capability of the organisation is decreasing, for instance due to poor management, loss of key staff, etc. The observable performance / output initially seem to be little impacted by declining internal quality. Competent staff take over more responsibility, more external resources are utilised, and generally adjustments are made to compensate for lost capacity and capabilities. Over time however, the organisation is hollowed out, organisational (or technical) debt accumulates and then the external performance drops significantly and rapidly.

Once this drop has occurred, it is hard and takes much time and determination to regain the original capability (2).

Trust in media, business partners, organisations, etc:  A similar pattern can be observed in all trust based relations. We experience a fairly quick drop in trust, once we feel betrayed or scammed, and it takes much more effort and time to regain trust than it took to lose it.

The last example also indicates that while the general pattern is the same, the resilience (the duration of negative effect until tipping point) seems to be quite different: in the example of trust there appears to be a larger asymmetry, i.e. people tend to lose trust rather quickly. Hardly anyone will continue to trust a business partner after being scammed. Regaining trust is takes much more effort.

Also, should the regaining phase (2) be interrupted by more negative impact (e.g. lack of determination of management, rebounds, violation of trust) the curve might spiral down even more sharply and the return path could take much more effort.

The Death of the Eccentric (and Relevant) Professor (and what ChatGPT will do)

Peter Thiel (in discussion with David Graeber) spot on in 2014. Exactly that happened. 

But now consider, what ChatGPT etc. will do? The bad currency now gets amplification by “artificial intelligence”. And I think the best description for ChatGPT might in fact would be: mediocrity amplifier (similar like its data-foundation Wikipedia).

Sounds like what happened in banking and investment in the last decades and worked perfectly well as we all know (2008, 2022, ...).

Follow the Science or Elitist Delusion?

“We know precisely and scientifically what the effects of pollution, waste of natural resources, the population explosion, the armaments race, etc., are going to be. We are told so every day by countless critics citing irrefutable arguments. But neither national leaders nor society as a whole seems to be able to do anything about it.”

When was this written?

The Austrian biologist and system thinker Ludwig von Bertalanffy wrote this in his excellent book General Systems Theory from 1969 (highlights by me). This was common thinking in the first half of the 20th century where many intellectuals believed in scientific management and politics. For instance the very influential intellectual Alfred Korzybski wrote in Manhood of Humanity (1921):

“it will give a scientific foundation to Political Economy and transform so-called “scientific shop management” into genuine “scientific world management.”

It turns out that the precise and irrefutable arguments tend to hold relatively little water in the long term in complex global systems. Most predictions of that type, which were based on irrefutable arguments, turn out to be wrong indeed.

There is no need though to repeat such mistakes 60 years later over and over again. For instance, in believing predictions of economist or eXtinction rebellion or even worse, Last Generation, who all refer to irrefutable arguments, that are not to be discussed any longer by anyone else than them, the high priests of knowledge.

If anyone claims things are alternativlos, or not to be questioned, we do good to question these ideas especially hard and remove such leaders from power as quickly as possible. They are the most dangerous ones.

To be fair to Bertalanffy though, he also writes in this book the following, very powerful quotation:

“We have a fair idea what a scientifically controlled world would look like. In the best case, it would be like Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, in the worst, like Orwell’s 1984.”

How did this prediction by Harvard climate scientist James Anderson in 2018 published in my favourite media outlet Forbes turn out?

This NASA graph with data up to 2023 shows the current ice cover pretty much in the middle of the years 2012–2023.

What do we learn from that?

  1. Check for the track record and do not read media that is regularly wrong
  2. Immediately ignore what one single scientist says; to speak with Nassim Taleb: “Science is great, scientists are dangerous”
  3. Do not support catastrophism. It is most likely not true and harms reasonable steps to approach the fact, that we indeed have a climate change problem.
Trust in science and media is lost (because we constantly amplify the extremists and naive one-trick-pony activists) and we indeed inflicted large harm to our society, albeit not necessarily the one these people are warning us from — think of the Energy disaster in Germany, Europe and in many other developing countries as a consequence of the large scale mistakes made by countries like Germany.

The Case Against Education

Maybe I was wrong believing that current universities are in major trouble, because their quality of research and most notably education is dropping from a low level to a dismal one. As the argument goes: that narcissistic wokeists took over universities — in a follow up of post modern destruction of clear and reasonable thinking — and joining those who never had interest in teaching anyways. Now, as they mostly succeeded, universities are so broken that their value proposition for society and companies drops towards zero.

I do not disagree with this assessment in principle, but if Bryan Caplan is right with his signalling theory, quality of education was never a big issue to start with. Signalling is, according to his assessment, about 80% of a degree of most kinds. Now, if this is true, then it does not make a substantial difference if wokesters damaged education even further and thus push the signaling proportion to 90% or 95%. The educational value was barely a given beforehand either.

Actually the opposite could be true: now you do not only signal that you make it into and through college, you also signal that you have the “right” values and believe in the enlightened religion. 

A practice we thought we removed during enlightenment as it were. But who cares?

Well. Reality might care. 

As physics will put an end to airy ideas of a de-materialised economy and energy transition — as if materials and laws of physics would not count any more, since we got the iPhone, the same must be true for signaling on a larger scale. If the signaling theory is true, we waste extraordinary amounts of resources into nonsense, which clearly cannot be sustained indefinitely. At one point in time, reality catches you. We currently observe who the “green” energy bubble is bursting — largely because of massive incompetence by those who drove it (NGOs, research centres, politicians), we are stuck in stagnation as far as building and maintenance of old fashioned infrastructure goes and we loose ourselves in idiotic political disputes that solve no real world problem.

Biology and medicine will simply not work much longer in any reasonable way, should we decide not to know what a woman is. Not to mention, that at one point in time the majority of women will realise that decades of hard earned rights are chopped away in benefit of radical fringe and honestly, stupid ideas. And don't get me started on indigenous and alternative mathematics and physics.

In practical terms: either corporations will call the bluff and will not hire candidates especially with degrees from (elite) universities any longer, but people who actually know what they are doing, or other nations where the king still wears clothes will overtake us. Overtake us in terms of economic prosperity, human rights and living standards. And fast.

Energy Predictions 2040s

My energy predictions in Jan. 2023 for ~2040:

Under the assumption, that the majority of western and industrialised countries do not experience an economic and social collapse and that we do not let hundreds of millions of people die in the developing world (due to malnutrition and lack of affordable energy) in the next two decades:

  • The current and coming global energy and food crises is largely a result of extraordinarily bad political decisions over the last 20 years.
  • Large scale wind and solar are dead on arrival. There will be projects, the vast majority will not be profitable, highly subsidised and continue to destabilise electrical grids. Investments in large scale wind and solar will turn out to be neither economically nor ecologically useful.
  • Energy storage with batteries and other technologies, hydrogen economy and the like will play no relevant role in the next 20 years.
  • Rooftop solar will be extended and be useful in some cases and enhance energy resilience for the wealthy at a high cost.
  • Coal will continue to grow, at least for the next decade.
  • Countries that now invest heavily in oil and gas exploration and most importantly in nuclear energy will be the ones surviving the coming energy crisis.
